Art Mola Designs

A grade 4 class had fun doing this project. The students were asked to do an internet search for samples of and information on molas. After the students had developed a sense of mola design characteristics we discussed what makes this art distinctive. The students were asked to choose a character in keeping with the topic and create a design that included an image and surrounding pattern. They coloured the shapes with felts and added sticky dots to make the trademark patterns. Students were then asked to use their paper design as the basis for a paint design. The mola project was particularly easy to recreate in paint
because there were few "special effects" and only basic paint tools were needed. The students found that single clicking with the large, round DoodlePaint Pencil tool in the colour of their choice was a great way to add the dot shapes featured in mola designs. Although we stayed with a traditional theme, this project could be the basis for a space creature or other fantasy theme.
The paper design is shown at the top. The DoodlePaint design is below.
